Duran Duran's James Bond Theme Voted Best Ever By Fans In Gigwise survey
by Jason Gregory
Thursday, October 30, 2008

Duran Duran's theme tune for the James Bond film A View To Kill has been voted the best ever by fans.

The song, which shared its title with the 1985 film, came top ahead of Shirley Bassey's ‘Goldfinger' and ‘Live and Let Die' by Paul McCartney & Wings in the Gigwise survey.

Carly Simon's ‘Nobody Does It Better' – from The Spy Who Loved Me – was fourth, while another of Bassey's Bond themes, ‘Diamonds Are Forever', came in at five.

The James Bond theme has become one of the most coveted recording tasks of in all of film.

Duran Duran were originally chosen to record the theme for A View To Kill – written in collaboration with composer John Barry - after bassist John Taylor approached director Cubby Broccoli at a party.

The track sees the band's trademark 80s electro collide with the lavish and sophisticated cunning found in many of the franchise's theme songs.

Other artists whose songs made the top-ten in the Gigwise survey included Nancy Sinatra and Tina Turner.

Meanwhile, Jack White and Alicia Keys' track for the new Bond movie Quantum of Solace rounded off the top-ten.

The song, entitled ‘Another Way To Die', has already proved popular with Bond fans ahead of the movie's UK release tomorrow.

The song appears at the zenith of our list no doubt thanks to Duran Duran's enduring popularity and hardcore fan base.

September 2008 Duran Duran's Rio has been named the greatest music video of all time

The 1982 video, featuring the band in suits on a Caribbean beach being teased by scantily-clad women, beat favourites such as Michael Jackson's Thriller and Madonna's Like a Prayer to claim the title.

Bjork's video for her 1999 hit All Is Full of Love, where she played a robot in a steamy clinch with another robot, took second place.

Take On Me, the 1985 video from A-ha, where singer Morten Harket was a comic book character who comes to life, was third, followed by Jackson's famously spooky 1983 hit Thriller.

Icelandic group Sigur Ros's surreal video for Svefn-g-Englar was fifth in the poll of MTV viewers, followed by the anarchic gig scene in Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991).

Radiohead's Just video (1995), featuring a man inexplicably lying down in the street and Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity (1996), where he danced on a moving floor, were next.

The top ten was completed by Madonna's Like A Prayer (1989), controversial for featuring burning crosses, statues weeping blood and the singer seducing a black Jesus, and US group OK GO's Here It Goes Again (2006), with the band on treadmills.

Around 40,000 MTV viewers voted for the poll.

Pop legends DURAN DURAN have been awarded the ultimate music video accolade by MTV viewers who voted the band's legendary clip for their hit single “RIO” “The Greatest Video Of All Time”. This is the latest honour for the members of DURAN DURAN who have long been acknowledged as pioneers in this field and are widely recognized for having turned music video-making into an art form.

In what was a landslide victory vote, DURAN DURAN beat off stiff competition from the likes of Michael Jackson's “Thriller”, Madonna's “Like A Prayer” Nirvana's “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Fatboy Slim's “Praise You”, Notorious B.I.G's “Sky's The Limit” and Rage Against The Machine's “Sleep Now In The Fire” to claim the top slot.

Lead singer Simon Le Bon said of the award: “We were all extremely honoured to hear that ‘Rio' had been named the ‘Greatest Video Of All Time', particularly because it was the MTV viewers who had voted for it. Our relationship with MTV has always been a very special one to us – as we started out together and their support over the years was definitely instrumental in our success.

“We enjoy the process of making videos and ‘Rio' is still one of our favourites. It was shot on location at a time when very few artists had ventured out of the studio to film their videos. Russell (Mulcahy) did an amazing job – and should share this with us.”

Fusing music, art and fashion to an unprecedented degree, DURAN DURAN transformed videos from what had previously been a simple marketing tool into one of the music industry's most valuable assets. With exotic locations, beautiful girls and stunning visuals, DURAN DURAN set a whole new standard, breaking the mould and defined an era.

Having sold over 70 million records, and consistently topping the charts around the world, DURAN DURAN are widely recognized as one of the most successful pop groups of the past three decades.

Since reforming in 2002, the band have been honoured with no less than five of the music industry's most prestigious awards including MTV's “Lifetime Achievement Award”, Q Magazine's “Lifetime Achievement Award”, the British Phonographic Industry's “Outstanding Contribution to Music Award”, a Spanish Onda “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the coveted Ivor Novello “Outstanding Contribution To British Music Award”.

First time in the Museum's history they have opened their doors for a rock concert June 10.2008

Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon said he hoped his band had "put a smile on the Mona Lisa's face" with a historic gig at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The band became the first group to perform at the museum, playing to a crowd in the Louvre Pyramid, which was designed by IM Pye.

The band's concert was staged to help raise money for the 18th century art gallery at the museum, which is currently undergoing restoration.

"It was a great honour for us to be asked to perform at this prestigious event in one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Paris and for such a worthy cause to the arts,” Le Bon said.

"We are all great lovers of the arts and have visited the museum's works many times. Helping to raise funds for this incredible institution is a tremendous privilege for all of us."

Duran Duran have said they appreciate being paid respect by younger musicians such as Arctic Monkeys and The Killers.
  • Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor said: "It's the greatest form of flattery. Sometimes the music press try to write us out of music history a little bit, so it's been really cool that bands have actually said we were a good band, and they were good songs and they want to be a little bit like us and take something from Duran Duran."
  • "I think people who grew up in the 80's are often going to think of us," said keyboard player Nick Rhodes . "That was when we started out so it's inevitable to a degree. We did have quite an impact musically at that time. But we've always carried on working, throughout the 1990s. It's good to think we've been around almost 30 years and we've put together a new album like Red Carpet Massacre which feels very fresh and sharp."
  • On May 9th.2008 in Las Vegas The Killers joined the band on stage while performing Planet Earth

October 2007: NICK RHODES on the lost album REPORTAGE/album that was scrapped when Andy left for the second time
Reportage, the grim, grasping-for-something album the band was hoping to release before Timbaland came to the rescue. To hear Rhodes describe it, the album sounds like a cry for help, if not a suicide note. “It was a very angry record for Duran Duran, quite political,” he says. “We’ve always reflected what’s around us; it’s just that we always tried to pick the more uplifting subjects. But there was so much doom and gloom and horror that it had got pretty deep under our skin.”

October 2006/ New Orleans School Visit
While in New Orleans to perform at the Voodoo Music Experience, Duran Duran paid a visit to Warren Easton High School. This school was devastated by hurricane Katrina and has slowly been rebuilding after being closed for 7 months. About 50% of the student body is back at school now, and welcomed the band to take a tour of the school and participate in a press conference/autograph session with the School's Journalism Department. Simon, Nick, Roger and John also paid a surprise visit to the Warren Easton High School's Marching Band rehearsals.
Ocotber 26.2006/ officially confirmed that Andy Taylor leaves Duran Duran

from duranduran.com

To Our Fans

We know that there has been a tremendous amount of speculation over the past few weeks regarding Andy Taylor's continued involvement with the band and we are sorry that we've been unable to provide you with more information until now. The past five years have been an incredible journey for us all - and having the original five back together was something that we had wanted to see happen for some time. As of last weekend, however, the four of us have dissolved our partnership and will be continuing as Duran Duran without Andy, as we have reached a point in our relationship with him where there is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together. Although obviously disappointed and saddened about this, we are excited about the next chapter of the Duran Duran story and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Simon, John, Nick and Roger

Since their birth in Birmingham, England, in the late seventies, Duran Duran have had several lineups. First there were five. Then three. Then two. Then some new guys. Then the original five. And now they’re down to four again, and those four are wondering what happened to guitarist Andy Taylor. One minute, the band says, they were expecting him at their recording sessions in New York; the next, well, they were still expecting him . . .
“We thought he was going to turn up,” Le Bon says. “We even had a driver waiting at the airport. Andy’s mobile was switched off and he didn’t respond to any e-mails—they all bounced back. After two days it became apparent he wasn’t coming.”
“We realized there were probably some slightly deeper problems going on there,” ... Predictably, the separation has gotten litigious. And there does seem to be an undercurrent of resentment that Andy Taylor’s absence has made Duran less than whole at the pivotal moment of their comeback. “If I was him I think I’d avoid hearing the album,” Le Bon says. “By now I think I would have got an inkling that there was something quite special going on. It’s really sad. Some guys in the band are a bit angry. I’m sad. I’m worried about him, more than anything.”... “Hey, we can still do it,” he says. “And you know what? We haven’t got fat. And you know what? We’ve got hair, and we can still put clothes on, and we can still do photo sessions, and, okay, we don’t look like we did 25 years ago, but we don’t look that bad.”

UNPLUGGED MEMORIES -12 years since their beautiful MTV unplugged performance
WE HAVE VIVID MEMORIES OF THAT DAY. IT WAS RECORDED ON A SOUND STAGE IN NEW YORK CITY AND WE HAD REHEARSED THE SONGS FOR A FEW DAYS, AS THEY WERE DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENTS. WE HAD NEGOTIATED THE SET DESIGN WITH MTV - OUR FRIEND STEPHEN SPROUSE HAD MADE SOME PAINTINGS OF SPEAKERS AND AMPLIFIERS FOR US, WHICH WE HUNG ON CHAINS SYMBOLICALLY REPRESENTING THE ABSENCE OF REAL AMPLIFICATION. WE HAD ALSO BROUGHT IN DRAPES AND A CHANDELIER - IT LOOKED QUITE BEAUTIFUL ON THE DAY. IRONICALLY, WHEN WE FINISHED TAPING OUR SET, THE NEXT BAND TO FILM SEVERAL HOURS LATER WAS NIRVANA. SO EVERY TIME WE SEE FOOTAGE FROM THEIR UNPLUGGED SHOW, IT REMINDS US OF OURS, AS MTV KEPT THE SAME DRAPES, CHANDELIER AND LIGHTING THAT WE HAD REQUESTED.

MUSICALLY, IT WAS MORE OF A CONTRAST FOR US THAN MOST OTHER ARTISTS WHO HAD PREVIOSULY PERFORMED ON THE SHOW SINCE WE NORMALLY USE CONSIDERABLY MORE ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY. WE FEEL WE ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE, AND ENJOYED THE PROCESS OF FORCING AN ORGAN TO SOUND CLOSE TO A SYNTHESIZER. THE ADDITIONAL PERCUSSION WORKED WELL FOR US TOO, AS DID THE STRINGS - ALTHOUGH IDEALLY WE WOULD HAVE PREFERRED THE NUMBER OF ORCHESTRAL PLAYERS TO BE EXPANDED.

Duran Duran on bilboard end year chart-december 2005
Duran Duran made at least one year-end Billboard chart: they are #10 on the "Hot Dance Club Play Artists" chart (Destiny's Child is #1). You can thank the carry-over from "Sunrise" hitting #1 on the "Hot Dance Club Play" chart late last year, plus "What Happens Tomorrow" going to #2 this year, for that ranking.

DURAN DURAN SHOW OFF LIZ HURLEY'S LEGS

DURAN DURAN fans have been checking out LIZ HURLEY's legs on the big screen behind their heroes on the reformed British supergroup's most recent world tour.

Keyboard player and keen photographer NICK RHODES asked the actress/model if he could video Hurley's sexy legs in stockings and suspenders for one of the group's tours a decade ago.And when the quintet toured to promote their ASTRONAUT album last year (05), they decided to dig out the saucy footage.Rhodes' bandmate JOHN TAYLOR reveals the legs that fans see behind them as they perform onstage belong to HUGH GRANT's soon-to-be married ex.He explains, "We're being enhanced by shots of Liz Hurley's legs in delicious black stockings, which young Mr Rhodes made.

"Nick got hold of Liz Hurley - it must have been about 10 years ago, I guess - and asked her if we could film her legs for the WEDDING album tour. We dusted it (the footage) off and put it in this production." And now Hurley's legs feature on the band's latest concert DVD, which features the RIO hitmakers onstage in London in 2005.

#50 - Hungry Like the Wolf Duran Duran (1982)
The video that made teen idols of five funk-rock Brits

DD initially pitched themselves as a cross between Chic and the Sex pistols, and new-wave mad England ate up their hybrid of bubbly disco and AndyTaylor's gnashing metalloid guitar. But their second album, Rio, initially bombed in the U.S. Then, in the fall of 1982, MTV, which was then popping up on cable systems all over the country, started cranking the heavy-breathing "HLTW" video (shot in Sri Lanka by Russell Mulcahy), which showed off the Durans' male-model looks, and pubescent girls across America immediately raced to the nearest mall's record store (and makeup counter). By Christmas, "Wolf" was a Top 5 hit. As keyboardist Nick Rhodes put it, "video to us is like stereo was to Pink Floyd".

Media from Live 8: July 05

For the second time after 20 years Duran Duran again performed on special event, this time called ''Live 8''

The band had a 4 songs set: Smash hits : Sunrise,Ordinary World,Save A Prayer and Wild Boys

ROME - Crooner Francesco De Gregori launched Italy's Live 8 concert on Saturday, and British band Duran Duran belted out "Save a Prayer" — a track they also sang at the Live Aid show for African relief 20 years ago.

Under a blazing sun, thousands gathered in Rome's ancient Circus Maximus to watch Faith Hill and a string of Italian stars in one of 10 concerts across the globe to help raise awareness about African poverty.

"We as a species of humanity have to take responsibility for our brothers and sisters in Africa," Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon told the crowd. "Today is the beginning we're going to keep watching and we're going to keep doing it."

LE BON'S 'CHOCOLATE LUBRICANT' DISASTER: March 2005
DURAN DURAN frontman SIMON LE BON's declaration of his love for orange Smarties took a sinister turn when he found himself bombarded by the sweet treats onstage.

The ORDINARY WORLD star became the prime target for Smarties-throwing fans and, after initially condoning the bizarre activity, he soon realised hundreds of hot chocolates was actually a major health and safety hazard.

He says, "I once announced that I liked orange Smarties the best, so fans decided to bombard me with them. At every show we played, people would throw them on stage.

"Smarties aren't so great when they've been on a stage under hot spotlights. You tread on one and suddenly it releases this chocolate lubricant all over the stage that's more dangerous than a banana skin."

Duran Duran soccer ball SOLD FOR US $5,000.00 : March 2005

In 2004, Duran Duran attended the MTV Europe Music Awards in Rome and began collecting celebrity signatures on a soccer ball. Duran Duran founding member, Nick Rhodes, led the celebrity signature drive, believing the soccer ball would make a great auction item – with proceeds to benefit charity.
After seeing the devastation created by the Tsunami in South Asia, the band agreed to redouble their efforts and eventually auction the ball to benefit a charity involved in Tsunami relief .

Net proceeds from the celebrity signed soccer ball will benefit GlobalGiving, a charitable organization which focuses on grassroots and project-based relief efforts in areas affected by the Tsunami.

The soccer ball made its first public appearance on National English TV in January 2005. After crossing the pond, gathering additional signatures along the way, the ball made its final appearance on February 1, 2005 on Good Morning America.
